All over the world, Indians and their clothing is renowned for the way it portrays their cultural richness through their clothes. Indian clothing has many different styles for different seasons and occasions. Many of the Indian dresses are influenced by western styles and they are worn with a touch of Indian elegance. As far as Indian men are concerned, they basically wear dhoti. It is a long (usually 5 yards) and unstitched piece of fabric that is draped around the legs and waist area of a man. It is known by many other names in India as well but the most common name is dhoti. In many areas of India, dhoti is worn with a kurta on top. Usually these kurtas are simple but for any special occasions, a variety of brighter than usual colors and kurtas with embroidery are worn.
Another type of dressing that Indian men do is sherwani and payjama. Sherwani is typically like a straight long fitted jacket with buttons. The length of a sherwani is usually up till the knees and it is a formal wear in India. Since it is a formal wear, sherwanis usually have some kind of embroidery on them.
Lungi is also one essential wear of Indians but this type of clothing is preferred mostly at home. This is known to be a casual wear and men wear this at home.
After men, Indian women and their clothes are known globally for their beautiful colors and the types of work they have on them. From beautiful long and sleek saris to ghagras and salwar kameez; Indian women look elegant in whatever they wear.
Sari is a long piece of fabric draped around a women’s body with an upper blouse known as choli. Saris have many colors and types and women wear it according to their age, area and occasion.
Salwar Kameez is another very popular type of dressing that Indians carry. Salwars are baggy trousers with a lot of flare and they are tight around the ankles. Also another type is Churridar; it is fitted around the hips, thighs and ankles and it is usually worn with a kurta or frock.
